Elizabeth Beth Heideman, LCSW
Elizabeth Heideman is currently accepting new guests at our Wicker Park studio. She grew up in Des Moines, Iowa & moved to Chicago to pursue her BSW & MSW degrees at Loyola University & also received a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish Language & Literature, which included studying abroad & interning at a program for teen mothers in Santiago, Chile. After graduating, Beth focused on working with children & families in a range of settings, including at home & schools, to provide counseling & facilitate support groups.
Those who know Beth well describe her as easy-going, friendly, supportive & an organizer when it comes to activities & getting people together. Becoming a therapist was practically an obvious choice given that she genuinely enjoys being around people, is naturally empathic & a good listener.
Beth values therapy because we spend so much time alone with our thoughts & emotions that taking a step back to explore them with another human only allows us to see how much we influence our own everyday interactions & often reveals conflicting concepts, beliefs rooted in past stories & experiences, and strengths that we have not acknowledged or or identified in ourselves. Therapy blends the benefits of talking with a caring friend about important aspects of one’s life, AND is bolstered by clinical knowledge, evidence-based practices & an objective perspective that guides guests toward their own path of healing.
She is most eager to help those who are managing the impact of trauma & believes people are inherently resilient & exploring the narrative & meaning-making we have developed from life experiences provides a path to simultaneously overcoming the difficult aspects while acknowledging their impact and still allowing trauma to be part of one’s larger story; just not the focal point. Beth also specializes in working with children & families – kids are really what she’s passionate about because she loves how you’re able to see the wheels turning & it’s so powerful watching them take agency through skill-building & practicing decision-making that will lead them toward a future of their own creation.
Clinically speaking, Beth tends to take a strengths-based approach for her guests as well as employing an EmotionallyFocused Therapy (EFT) approach with partners & families. She often utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) because the concepts are very digestible & accessible to all, blending those with Mindfulness & other skills from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) & Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). And she enjoys incorporating creative interventions to help actively engage guests in their own treatment plan creation.
Beth recently returned to Chicago after living in Melbourne, Australia for the past few years. And even after traveling to 5 continents & living on 3, her absolute favorite place remains the lake in Iowa where she spent her summers growing up. On her time off, you can find her baking or walking my English Bulldog, Pudge, along the 606 and is just about an expert on all things Bravo TV. She is currently accepting new guests at our Wicker Park and Old Town studios.
