Barry Tan, MA, LCPC, CADC
Barry Tan is a licensed clinical professional counselor and certified alcohol and drug counselor who received his Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology and his Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University at Buffalo in Buffalo.
Barry decided to become a counselor because he believes that everyone has an inner strength that can be tapped on to reveal their best selves. He enjoys being able to help people recognize that they are stronger than they may believe. He values therapy because he believes that humans are social animals and connection to someone is as essential for health as food or water is.
Barry is happy to work with people who need to make changes in their life but may or may not know where to start. He welcomes people of all identities, LGBTQ+ affirming, and he sees therapy as a safe space for people to discover themselves without judgement or fear. He has a specialization in working with people with substance use issues with or without co-occurring mental health issues and life transitions. He also addresses career concerns, stress over life decisions, relationships, boundaries, and healthy habits for wellness.
His therapeutic style is primarily based on motivational interviewing, harm-reduction, and the strengths-based models. He also incorporates CBT interventions when guests recognize that they benefit most from that intervention. Guests experience him as practical, warm, thoughtful, creative and ready to engage in the work of life change.
In his free time, you can find Barry reading a good book with a nice cold glass of iced tea. He enjoys playing video games (both console and PC), and he cannot get enough of green tea lattes (both hot and chilled). He has 4 parakeets who love being sociable and a furry baby, Maddy, who just loves to help make others feel at ease.
Barry is currently accepting new guests via telehealth and in person at our Wicker Park and Old Town studios
